WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, but are you using it privately and securely? Here are 10 essential privacy tips every WhatsApp user should know.
1. Enable Two-Step Verification
Two-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your account. When enabled, you'll need to enter a PIN when registering your phone number with WhatsApp again.
How to enable: Settings → Account → Two-step verification → Enable
2. Hide Your Last Seen
Don't want everyone to know when you were last online? You can hide your "Last Seen" status or limit it to only your contacts.
How to change: Settings → Privacy → Last Seen → Choose "Nobody" or "My Contacts"
3. Control Who Sees Your Profile Photo
Your profile picture is visible to everyone by default. Change this to prevent strangers from seeing your photo.
How to change: Settings → Privacy → Profile Photo → Choose your preference
4. Hide Your About/Bio
The "About" section shows your status message to everyone. Keep it private if you don't want strangers reading your bio.
How to change: Settings → Privacy → About → Choose "Nobody" or "My Contacts"
5. Manage Read Receipts (Blue Ticks)
Blue ticks show when someone has read your message. You can turn them off, but note that you also won't see read receipts from others.
How to disable: Settings → Privacy → Read Receipts → Toggle off
6. Use Disappearing Messages
For sensitive conversations, enable disappearing messages. Messages will automatically delete after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days.
How to enable: Open chat → Tap contact name → Disappearing messages → Choose duration
7. Block Unwanted Contacts
If someone is bothering you, block them. Blocked contacts can't call or message you, and they won't be notified.
How to block: Settings → Privacy → Blocked contacts → Add
8. Check Linked Devices
Regularly check which devices are linked to your WhatsApp. Remove any devices you don't recognize.
How to check: Settings → Linked devices → Review and remove unknown devices
9. Don't Share Your Verification Code
Never share your WhatsApp verification code with anyone, even if they claim to be from WhatsApp support. WhatsApp will never ask for your code.
10. Message Without Saving Numbers
When you need to message someone temporarily (delivery, business, service), don't save their number to your contacts. Use our Direct Message Tool instead to keep your contact list clean and private.
Keep Your Contacts Private
Message anyone on WhatsApp without saving their number
Try Direct Message Tool →Extra Security Tips
- Use biometric lock: Enable fingerprint or Face ID lock in WhatsApp settings
- Be careful with forwarded messages: Verify information before believing or forwarding
- Don't click suspicious links: Even from contacts, links could be malicious
- Update regularly: Keep WhatsApp updated for latest security fixes
- Be cautious with groups: Anyone in a group can see your phone number
Privacy vs Convenience
Some privacy settings may affect convenience. For example, hiding "Last Seen" also prevents you from seeing others'. Find the balance that works for you.
Remember: End-to-end encryption protects your messages in transit, but your phone can still be accessed physically. Always use a strong phone lock.
